Re-listing the List
In January, I wrote about my favorite films of the young decade so far, an exercise that I took too seriously, but was rewarding both in that I’m proud of the piece, and that it netted me a few hundred subscribers. Now, halfway through the year that marks the decade’s halfway point, I ran a poll through my podcast, surveying critics, filmmakers, and friends of the show on their favorite films of the 2020s. If I took January’s state of the union listicle too seriously, I was humorless to the point of roboticism in calculating this list that I’ve already counted down on the podcast with JT and Malcolm, and now will be sharing with you readers in full, including every single ballot.
Before assembling the list of contributors, I devised a weighted point system. Voters were allowed to list anywhere from 10 to 30 films on their ballots. First place received ten points, second received nine, and so on, until eleventh. From there until the contributor gave up — and you’ll see the variety in quantity if you examine each individual ballot — titles were rewarded three-fourths of a point. Then came the contributors. I don’t exactly have a rolodex going, but mentally, I had about 15 people that I immediately approached. Then, over the course of a week, another 30. Of those 45, 31 contributed, plus the three hosts of the show, for a total of 34 ballots.
On the podcast, I started the countdown at number 30. For the sake of transparency, I will begin at number 50, a film that received three votes. Enjoy.
